The question is natural: if A5 blades interchange across Andis, Oster, and Wahl, why wouldn’t the snap-on combs? The answer sits in how the comb attaches — and it matters more than most groomers realize.
The mechanical truth: combs snap onto blades, not clippers
This is the hinge point. A professional metal snap-on comb is not a clipper attachment. It’s a blade attachment. The comb’s snap-on interface is engineered to lock onto the flat, detachable blade itself — whether that blade is an Andis UltraEdge, an Oster Cryogen-X, or a Wahl Competition blade.
Because the blade is the snap point, not the clipper body, the compatibility rules are straightforward: if your Andis clipper takes A5 detachable blades, and your Wahl comb is designed for A5 detachable blades, the comb will physically clip onto the blade. The clipper brand becomes irrelevant.
But here’s where the manufacturers draw the line: each brand officially lists compatibility only with its own machines, even though the mechanics would work otherwise.
What Wahl officially says
Wahl makes two separate snap-on comb product lines:

- These will not fit A5 blades
This is the critical distinction. The Wahl 3390-100 will not work with Wahl’s own 5-in-1 machines, and the 3379 will not work with A5 machines — even though all are Wahl.
What Andis officially says
Andis takes a simpler approach. The Andis #24845 Universal Stainless Steel Combs come with clear guidance: they fit A5 detachable blades at #10, #15, #30, or #40. The comb snaps onto the blade, regardless of what clipper body holds that blade.
Andis’s official stance is equally blade-centric. The comb’s compatibility is with the blade system, not the brand.
Why cross-brand use works in principle (and why the makers hedge)
Because the comb snap-on interface is standardized to the A5 blade itself — not to the clipper brand — a Wahl #3390-100 comb will mechanically clip onto an Andis #30 blade. The blade is the snap-on mount; the clipper body is irrelevant.
But the manufacturers’ official compatibility lists only name their own machines because:

Warranty and support. If a Wahl comb fails on an Andis machine, Wahl has no control over the Andis clipper’s blade alignment, sharpness, or wear. They can’t diagnose a system they didn’t design.

Two groups of Wahl clippers use combs that will not fit your Andis A5 machine:

- They will not attach to standard A5 blades
- The 5-in-1 blade system is proprietary to Wahl

- Check your blade. If you have an A5 Andis clipper with an A5 detachable blade, you can use any snap-on comb designed for A5 blades — officially Wahl’s #3390-100, or Andis’s #24845.
- Stick with the official pairing for safety. Wahl combs on Wahl machines, Andis combs on Andis machines. The mechanics work across brands, but the tolerance and fit are only guaranteed within the same brand.

- Oster: The breed charts standardize on “#30 & 1 inch UC” — a #30 blade with a 1-inch comb.
The blade underneath is always the closest-cutting size; the comb on top adds length. A #30 blade under a 3/4″ comb gives you a plush 3/4″ finish, not a surgical 3/4″. The math is: blade cut + comb spacing = total hair left.
Use a sharp blade — the comb teeth cut along the blade’s edge. A dull blade will jam the comb’s teeth, and a loose or worn blade won’t support the comb’s contact.
Wahl’s own warning: “Do not use a dull, cracked, or damaged blade. Always use a clean, sharp blade underneath your comb attachment.”
The safest path
If you own an Andis clipper and are tempted by a cheaper Wahl comb set: your safest move is the Andis #24845 Universal Stainless Steel Combs. They are designed, tested, and warranted for your Andis machine. You’ll know the fit is right, and Andis supports the pairing.
If you already own a Wahl #3390-100 and want to test it on an Andis A5 machine, the mechanics will likely work — the comb snaps onto the blade, not the clipper. But you’re outside the manufacturer’s warranty, and if the fit is off, neither company will troubleshoot it.
For most groomers, staying within the brand’s own ecosystem avoids a support call and ensures the fit was tested at the tolerance level that matters.
