Biggest Cat Breeds by Weight
The Maine Coon and Ragdoll are gentle giants; the Savannah is something else entirely. Here are the biggest cats, by the numbers.
How we built it
Computed automatically from the breed-standard adult-weight range on each PetGrit cat profile, ranked by the high end of that range. Weights are parsed from the same figures the profiles display.
Most cats settle around 8–10 pounds, but a handful of breeds grow far larger — some males rival a small dog in size. This ranking is computed live from the breed-standard adult weight on every cat profile in our dataset, ordered by the top of each weight range. The list mixes plush, gentle giants like the Maine Coon and Ragdoll with the tall, athletic Savannah, a recent hybrid that's in a category of its own.

The short version
- The Savannah is the largest domestic cat breed by weight, with the Ragdoll, Maine Coon, and Siberian leading the plush 'gentle giants.'
- Most big-cat breeds are slow-maturing — a Maine Coon can take 3–4 years to reach full size.
- Larger breeds need more food, bigger litter boxes, and sturdier perches, and their bulk can hide creeping weight gain.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest domestic cat breed?
By weight, the Savannah is the largest domestic cat breed — a tall, athletic hybrid of a domestic cat and the wild African serval, with large early-generation individuals reaching 20–25 pounds. Among the more traditional pet breeds, the Maine Coon and Ragdoll are the giants, with big males commonly hitting 15–20 pounds. The Maine Coon is often considered the largest standard (non-hybrid) breed.
How big do Maine Coons get?
Maine Coons are genuinely large cats. Males typically reach about 13–18 pounds and females 8–12, with an exceptionally long body and bushy tail that make them look even bigger. They're also slow growers — a Maine Coon often doesn't reach full adult size until 3 to 4 years old, much later than the typical cat's first birthday.
Do big cats need anything special?
Scale everything up. Bigger cats need larger litter boxes (many standard boxes are too small for a Maine Coon), sturdier cat trees and perches rated for their weight, and more food — fed to body condition, not a generic cup measure. Their size can disguise weight gain, so check their body condition regularly. Long-haired giants like the Maine Coon and Ragdoll also need consistent grooming to prevent mats.
